A useful packaging brief connects your product measurements with the structure, printed artwork and intended use. Confirm these elements before sampling so the design can be reviewed as a complete package.
1. Start with the product measurements
Provide the product length, width, height and weight, and explain how it should sit inside the packaging. Clarify whether measurements refer to the product, the inside of the box or its outside dimensions. List any accessories or multiple items that share the package.
For printed paper bags, include the contents, carrying requirements and preferred handle arrangement. For mailer boxes, explain the shipping route and whether the product needs an insert or additional protection.
2. Confirm the dieline before placing artwork
A dieline shows the cutting, folding and assembly layout. Use the confirmed structure as the artwork reference. Keep cutting and folding guides separate from printable graphics, label panels clearly and check how the artwork will face after assembly.
Do not move fold lines or resize a production dieline to make a graphic fit without reviewing the structure. If the product dimensions change, the dieline may need to be developed again.
3. Prepare the artwork and references
- Provide the editable artwork and a reference preview.
- Include linked graphics and any fonts or outlined text needed for production.
- Identify the required color references and which areas use spot colors.
- Keep important text and marks clear of cuts, folds and glue areas.
- Confirm bleed and safe areas with the production dieline instead of assuming one fixed allowance.
4. Explain the surface finishes
Mark foil, embossing, debossing, spot coating or other finishing areas on separate, clearly named layers. State whether the finish applies outside, inside or to selected panels. For rigid gift boxes, the wrap and the formed structure need to be reviewed together.
5. Review the assembled sample
Check product fit, closure operation, artwork orientation and the position of finishing effects. Look at the package in its assembled state, not just the flat artwork. Record revisions clearly so the approved sample and production files use the same specification.
