Telefónica Germany’s HomeBox 4 router has received a Green Product Award, recognizing not only the product’s compact, all-in-one design but also the role its packaging plays in improving sustainability, logistics efficiency, and user experience.
Made from FSC-certified cartonboard, the packaging uses a Ships in Own Container (SIOC) design. This means it can be shipped without additional outer packaging, reducing material use while reportedly increasing container utilization by up to 33%.
Accessibility is another key feature. Braille is incorporated into the packaging seal, making the product easier for visually impaired customers to identify and open. QR codes and installation instructions printed directly on the box with soy-based ink eliminate the need for additional paper inserts.
Together, these features demonstrate a more holistic approach to sustainable packaging. Rather than serving solely as a protective shell, the HomeBox 4 package also functions as a shipping container, installation guide, and accessible customer touchpoint. By combining material reduction, efficient transportation, and user-friendly design, Telefónica Germany has created packaging that adds value throughout the product journey.
Since 2013, the international Green Product Award and Green Concept Award have recognized outstanding sustainable products, services, and forward-looking concepts.
Earlier this year, McKinsey also explored how packaging can become an important driver of performance and value. Its analysis considered how consumer goods companies can respond to customer expectations, create a positive unboxing experience, simplify returns, and improve collaboration among packaging teams across their organizations.
The HomeBox 4 provides a clear example of this broader shift: when sustainability, logistics, accessibility, and customer experience are addressed together, packaging can deliver far more value than product protection alone.
